WOYWW 627 - Not so flamin' June - and G7

Hello, lovely deskers!   Welcome back to another round of WOYWW...  that weekly bloghop looking at the underbelly of creativeness, the mess and mayhem that is our desks... LOL.

As I type this, the weather is typically British summer - drizzle but warm and distinctly muggy.  Yuk.  Despite this, we have a major influx of visitors to Cornwall (no surprise there) but this has been augmented and indeed frustrated by G7.  I live about 7 miles from Carbis Bay and Tregenna Castle, and it's causing a lot of trouble.  Road closures - including all the bridges and overpasses for the A30, the main road that runs down the spine of Cornwall - and full accommodation are making things difficult for locals and visitors alike, and we get daily flyovers of USAF Hercules etc.  Don't get me started on the parking issues in Falmouth, where the media circus are hanging out.

Regardless, I'm sat in my cosy little nook, keeping myself to myself, and busy plying my needle through fabric.  They can keep their shenanigans!

The desk this week is suffering a bit from "pile it high" syndrome - I've not had the opportunity to sit and clear it up but my fingers are itching again to get on with it...

I'd also like to say a bit thank you to my swappees for the ATCs - what a lovely little collection!  So thank you LLJ, Ali and Spyder for your lovely ATCs and postcards!  I loved the little folder Spyder sent her ATCs in (and the little spider on one of them - too cute... :D).

Stitching - Siren's Lament lies untouched, with good reason!  Myth & Magic Stitch Wars, round 14, is well under way and there's just too much confetti in it for me to get a good stitch count in a hurry on.

However, The Christmas Moose (why didn't they call it The Christmoose?) has had a significant amount of progress - you can even make out where the roofs will be on that side.  Loving working on this!

Peppermint Purple's SAL is up to date as of last week and today's chart is now out, so I'll be working on that shortly.

Lastly, my Field of... er... Ducks is coming along nicely.  There's good blocks of colour so yesterday evening I churned out over 320 stitches on it which was pretty awesome and very necessary - our clan had been "poisoned" by another clan and had to collectively stitch 1000 stitches as fast as possible to reduce the damage being caused over time.

The "ducks" caused a bit of a hoot over on my YouTube channel last week, and I also coined another phrase, where SAL no longer stands for "Stitch-a-Long" but "Stitch-a-Later".  Seems a couple of folks are going to adopt that now... heheheheh

So that is that, this week.  I found this "funny" on the web this week and had to share it - it takes a bit of thinking about but is v clever...

WOYWW 626 - Flaming June

 Hello again, lovely deskers - welcome back to another round of WOYWW.  Deets here....   I must confess, there's not a lot to show this week!  And I'm much remiss in visiting desks, starting with the best of intentions but usually failing miserably.  This weekend we spent two days tidying, clearing the decks as it were, and cleaning ready for a visit from a family member who we hadn't seen for almost two years, since she last came to our house shortly after we moved in.

Therefore, not much to report!

‘‘Twas a lovely day.... scorching hot with an offshore wind which meant lots of sunburned bodies - mine included  just my legs/feet, and not too badly for me although I’ve got a heat rash on my arms which is a bit disconcerting.

And here's a shot of our peony, finally in bloom.  It's taken the last 7 years for us to nurture it to this point - Mr B had given up all hope but two days ago it popped open - ta dah!  Last year we got a bud (first time ever) but it never opened and there was a weeny hole in it so I think a bug got in and had a feast.

WOYWW 625 - Another Year Older

Greetings and salutations my fellow deskers!  So last week was the 12th Birthday for WOYWW, and today is my own birthday.... toot toot!  Have to blow my own trumpet as I'm sat here today, preparing for a full day of work (I work Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday afternoons, but all day Wednesdays currently, how rude is that? LOL) and on my own bar the animal companions.  No Mr B - he's currently stuck somewhere around London with a delivery - and Miss B is sleeping the day away in Exeter, having worked a late shift at the bar she's at.  Her dissertation was submitted without a hitch (fingers crossed) and now it's the waiting game.  At least she's back at work and has something to take her mind off it a bit!

So, onto the desk.

Oh my.  Have I got a treat for you - not.  The desk as you can see is relatively clear (who am I kidding???).  The roses in the pot are still waiting for me to do something with them, and I have another 10 black silk roses downstairs that I'm at a loss for what to do with them.  The urn you see on the desk is needing a coat of paint of some description, to tie them in, and the roses need shortening somewhat.  However, it's a bit small so I'm thinking of treating myself to a nice vase from Weird and Wonderful Ceramics.  Homewares for the darkly inclined.  We bought some of their kitchenware, and were just about to complete the set when they discontinued the particular range I had my eye on. Sigh.  I have a plan, though, being the consummate crafter, on how to get around that.... hehehehe

I'm digressing.  Back to the desk.  I made 8 ATCs in the end, and they've all got homes to go to - I'm just waiting for one address (Ali!) and they should all be going out in the post today.  I missed the post yesterday or they would have gone then (apart from Felicia's - I need to visit the post office for that one!).  I'll share the ATCs I made (they're not particularly special I'm afraid) once they've all arrived at their destinations.

But.... wait....what's this?  Gah.  I seem to be spreading!  It started out with a couple of frames and a bag of bits on the sofa and suddenly... yikes!  I'd better get myself sorted out.

In my defence, the sofa is now bloomin' uncomfortable to sit on and is causing me to have considerable pain in my left hip, and a trapped nerve/sciatica on the right side (a new sofa is on its way, don't worry).  So as I've physically migrated seat wise, so has all my stitchy stuff and where I bought the trolley a couple of weeks ago, it seems I'm now overflowing it.

Stitching... it's only been a week so not much has been done.  The only updates are to:

and the Peppermint Purple SAL - I added last week's box, and this week's has only just been released online, so that's yet to be done.  But I am what I'd call "up to date".

Another new start though - and this has a short tale attached.  I'm on a FB group - Cross Stitch Friends in the UK - and they usually have various swaps etc going on.  This month they elected to do an ATC on the theme of stitching.  What ho! says I - this could be interesting.  So, in my all knowing wisdom I decided to do a fully stitched ATC.  Then forgot about it until a couple of days ago - it needs to be posted on Friday.  Cue plenty of "assertive stitching" (a phrase I nicked from a fellow YouTuber, Georgie, rather than "panic stitching") in order to get it done.  I'm on track - just got a couple of little motifs to stitch, and then the back to do.  And then to post it..... I must be nuts.

Julia commented last week on the fact that my starts seem to be located in different places all the time - the top left corner, the centre, the words - and how did I decide where to start.  Welllll, she says, cracking her nuckles and setting to the keyboard, it's like this.

Often, patterns will give you an indication of where the centre point is on the chart, and tell you how big the finished piece will be.  Generally, you add an extra 2-3 inches of fabric to allow for stretching and framing, and you then have a choice of where to start - either 2-3 inches in from the edge, or in the centre once you've located that point.  When you're working on a piece that is not "full coverage" (like Christmas Moose, and the cactus in a pot I did a few months back) it makes sense to start from the middle and work outwards, as it saves an awful lot of counting to find where to start, and you're guaranteed to have placed the motif in the centre of the fabric (provided you got your fabric the right way up to start with!).  Full coverage pieces like Siren's Lament are a different matter.  You know exactly where the top corner is, and when you're working on something that big (35 A4 pages - 28 full and 7 partial!), finding the "middle" is nigh-on impossible.  I start top left, but I know others start top right or bottom left or right.  It all depends on preference, but the way I see it is that I'm right handed, and by working left to right, I don't fluff the work up by rubbing my hand on it.  The text start (Field of "ducks" LOL) is actually a top left corner start, and although it's not a full coverage piece, the majority of the design as at the top and on the left, so I worked out the inches I needed for framing etc, and just stuck in.

The box lurking on my desk contains some jewellery making stuff delivered yesterday, which I only opened this morning being forgetful, and therefore unsure if it was a birthday present!  I am thinking of making some needleminders and project bag dangles - I stupidly forgot to take a picture of the footie one I did for David.  Maybe in next week's blog!

WOYWW 418

It's WOYWW again!  How'd that happen?  And I'm back....

The desk, and indeed whole craft room, is overloaded and messy. I've been avoiding it for weeks. I really must finish these ATCS off, so Lisa M, please contact me!  

My most recent project is gradually growing. Unfortunately, so is the baby it's supposed to fit!  I'm going to a craft gathering tonight, so it'll get worked on there. It has a hood to knit while continuing  the pattern, so I've got some head-scratching to do. It's looking rather charming though...

Life here is rather crazy at the moment, and that's also part of the reason why I've been out of the loop and not doing much at my desk (aside from the black hole it's become.).  Yours truly started her CIPD Level 5 (for those not in the know, it's an HR qualification equivalent to second year of degree level, pretty high up stuff and very involved) so I've got a lot of working at home to do.  It's all online learning, and I've got to spend a minimum of 8 hours per week on it for the next 11 months.

Update on Lil Miss B - we've started visiting Universities.  Next one is Birmingham, so Shaz will be seeing some smiling faces near her in a fortnight....  Any of you up by Lancaster? Hehehehe  we just visited Chester.  I slept most of the following day, we were that tired.  We think we're going to book a room overnight when we do Lancaster.

Mr B has trained on a Hiab Container Lifter (see pic for an idea) recently.  He's like a kid with a Tonka Truck, happy as a sandboy.... LOL

WOYWW 416 - 8th Anniversary!

Well.

It's been a while (Christmas 2016!!!) since I last joined in with WOYWW. Not too sure why not but I think I'm just suffering from crafting fatigue. I rarely make cards any more. Haven't kept Project Life up to date. And I've just pottered with an odd bit here and there. Embroidery, knitting, crochet.

Today, my desk looks like this because I'm at work. The one at home, bit of a mess! It's got things to sell piled up on it mostly. I can't get a photo today because I forgot this morning, and this afternoon I'm heading straight down to Cornwall from work for a very good reason I can't share for now. I'll see if Mr B can send a pic later for me to add....

 

I will however make an ATC swap provided no-one minds waiting till after the weekend for it - I don't think I have time tomorrow evening as I'm straight back from Cornwall to packing for a weekend in Lincolnshire!

WOYWW 368 - welcome to the jungle...

So, another round of WOYWW has hit our desks, and frankly it finds me sat in the corner sucking my thumb, feeling distinctly non-creative.  However, that’s no reason not to join in, so here I am in the hope that joining in the blog hop as instigated by our lovely Julia Dunnit, and currently hosted by the equally lovely LLJ, will give me some much needed oomph in the creative mojo department.

 

Mind you, part of the problem may be down to the state of the craft room.  I can’t get any mojo to tidy it either, and it’s not like I don’t have a zillion things to do.  Like some cushion covers.  And lots of cards.  And some embroidery.  And a makeup bag.  I’m going to stop there before I overwhelm myself completely.  One step at a time.  Tidy the room.

Not that it’s been quiet around here, oh no.  Last Friday saw Lil Miss B’s last ever day at secondary school, with her going in to take her last GCSE (Physics, yuk, to quote she), so I grabbed a quick snap.  I’m not sure where the time has gone.  I did look down the back of the sofa for it but all I found was 3p, a couple of mouldy peanuts and an elastic band.

Friday night and Saturday saw me in attendance at Salisbury Cathedral where I joined the Salisbury Musical Society (such a mis-nomer, it always conjures up an image of smiling faces and docidoh-ing while singin “OHHHHHHHH! Klahoma! Where the wind...”!)  to perform Mozart’s Vespers and Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace.  An absolutely brilliant evening, the acoustics, as you would expect, were amazing and the soloists superb.  It was fun, but I’m not in any rush to join them permanently, as it will soon be panto season.... don’t start, you lot!.... and my Tuesday evenings will be taken up with other rehearsals and meetings and so on and so forth.

 It wasn't without trouble - the Friday evening rehearsal saw the fire alarms going off with us all being kicked out of the cathedral - cue arrival of fit firemen.  But as I posted on FB in the week who ever would have thought that I'd get a photo of the Cathedral with a fire engine AND a cello! 

 

 

 

Lastly, t’was our 3^rd wedding anniversary yesterday and hubster sent me this fantastic bouquet of flowers to commemorate the occasion.  He also bought me a very lovely Pandora charm.  Awww...

 

So that’s it for this week.  I will endeavour to visit as many of you as I can.  I’m aware there’s a couple of you wanting ATCs from me – we seem to be having a problem getting emails back and forth for addresses, but I do have a couple of spares if anyone wants to boost their collection at all!

WOYWW 365 - the 7th Anniversary one.

Hello deskers!  We're at it again!  Another desk view (pretty much the same as last week in fact) and a chance to sign up for an ATC swap to celebrate the 7th Anniversary of this wonderous blog hop we call home. Albeit a messily creative one.  Thank you, Julia, for starting this crazy adventure for us all, and becoming our friend in so many ways, and being an enabler that's made friends of all of us.  I hope you are well on the road to recovery.... And thank you LLJ for being the star you are!

I will be swapping ATCs - I'm out at crop tonight making mine and I'm happy to swap with more folks than just the one following me.... Let me know if you're interested!  I'm going to make about a dozen but can easily do more....

I have had such a busy day - I took photos this morning to post this, and here I am at 19:11 frantically typing up today's post as I should be out and about again by now.  So much for sneakily doing it at work today!

My desk, as you can see, is pretty dull.. .  The second desk however, has the in-progress makings of a rather lovely card on it.  I can't lay claim to this one.  This is all Lil Miss B's handiwork.  Unfortunately, it's actually my birthday card, she hasn't quite got the hang of this subterfuge lark and forgets to tidy away secretive stuff.  Doh!

Isn't it lovely?  Shadow stamping, and metallics, and card candy.  She's got the hang of the less is more approach, and she does make me quite proud with what she can turn out.  sigh...

I remembered to take a picture of the good luck card from last week though!

So - as one or two have quite rightly spotted, there's a tunnel book on my desk.  I'm a member of Collabor-ART, an online group of creative and funky individuals (yes, you, Kyla) and we're doing a tunnel book circle journal.  The more astute amongst you might notice that's a picture of Edgar Allan Poe.  No prizes for guessing the theme of my book...


Now I've done the cover it's ready for sending off - and another one will be with me soon.  So I'll have that on my desk next week, no doubt.


My next mission is my ATCs for crop this weekend and for the anniversary... Yay!

WOYWW 159.... a new angle...

Hello fellow WOYWWers!  Happy Wednesday to you all.  I hope you are all fine and well and prepared to bare all in the name of crafting science.  Or WOYWW, to be more precise.  LOL

I managed to get round a few of you last week - I've jumped on the band wagon and taken to visiting those who have the same second number as me - and it's taken me to a few blogs I've not seen before.  V cool idea, whoever first thought of it.

If you're not familiar with WOYWW, well, you need to go say hi to Mrs Dunnit at Dunnit Dimensions where all will be revealed and you can either just bloghop or add your own desk for us to gawk at admire.

Firstly, this piece of lusciousness is my ATC from Doone - which on the back is addressed to "The Eye of Morti" - heheheheheh.  More chucklesome was the cartoon of the dead car on the envelope.... I LOLled at that for sure...

Next, here are three lovely ATCs I received from Zoe, Lavinia and Ros A - Ann B, I'm sorry hun, I got a bit muddled when I said I'd had yours.  You must think I'm a loon.  I'm sure it's en route!  I think there are a few out there in the ether on their way to me as there's another one coming from foreign climes.  I hope folks liked the fun ones I sent out.  Not quite my usual standard, but a bit of fun nonetheless.  I have one left that hasn't yet been earmarked - so please, first person with their hand up?

My desk this week?   Oh dear......

And let's be honest, the space behind it on the bed isn't any better now, is it?  Oops indeed.

I have new stash on that bed somewhere, after visiting both Paper Arts in Stroud (Hi Ladies!  I'm the one with the enthusiastic partner!) and Snazzy Stamping in Swindon (Yay, someone who'll have my self-adhesive aluminium in 3 months' time!) when we went to Gloucester to look at a car.  I see that someone didn't put away the paper after wrapping up a father's day gift, and I'm not entirely sure which of the two potential culprits it was!

However, I am suitably chuffed to announce that I have another desk too.  Years and years ago, I tried to learn how to crochet, only to fail miserably.  Squares?  Hah!  More like rhombuses, with all different length sides etc.  I gave up very quickly cos tension wasn't working for me.  I never tried it again.

That is, until last Wednesday evening.

Over a year ago I was given a mahoosive amount of knitting wool, as my friend's mother had died leaving lots of wool and neither he nor his girlfriend, nor anyone else in his family, could knit.  I figured I needed to make something for their kids but having failed on the jumper front (and kids don't half grow fast!) I wanted to make something they could keep.  My own Grandmother knitted a kerjillion squares to make the blanket I still use to this day, and so I thought I'd do the same.  Only I wanted something that would grow a little faster. 

So last Wednesday, I took the bull by the horns (or should I say, wool by the hook?) and with grim determination, taught myself to crochet a basic granny square.  To say I'm over the moon with the success of it, is an understatement.  I can only do one square a night, simply because any more than that will set my carpal tunnel off, but that's fine by me.  See you here this time next year, cos I figure it will take that long to make enough squares.  But here are my first six.   Yay!

Ah... I hear Miss Julia knocking on my window, to complain that I'm taking too much of your time up with my waffle!  Best be heading off - maybe I'll bump into you in a comments box near you!  Might not be today - might be next Tuesday, but I'll do my best to slide by.....  Ta-ra!

WOYWW 158 - where the heck did it go.....?

Ohmahgawd...

Somebody stole my week.  That's the only way I can reconcile myself to the fact that it is now the 13th June. 

Humblest apologies, fellow WOYWWers.  Not only have I not made my spare ATCs, but I didn't manage to visit everyone who visited me.

I have an excuse.  (yeah, yeah, comme normale, I hear you say....)

It's car shaped.

My trusty Clio went bang big style on my way home last Wednesday, so most of my home-surfing time has been taken up with car hunting.  So far, no luck, but if you know of anyone who has a 5-door diesel Clio for sale that is no more than 12 years old and has less than 100k on the clock, let me know.....LOL

What's that?  Get on with it you say?  Oops - I'm digressing.....

The real reason you're here is my desk - and hopefully by now you're one of the gazillio-dozens who does know what WOYWW stands for.  If not, then head on over to The Stamping Ground where all will be revealed!

My desk is its usual scruffy self.  As you can see, there's plenty going on.  On my WOYWW stand at the back you will see (next to Edwin) the fab ATC I got from Lavinia - thanks hun!!!  Just need your address now!  The sandwich tub contains silver EP and in the middle at the front are the new ATCs I'm working on.  I've not managed to get any aluminium sheet yet - it's on order but the company in question is a small concern and they're on holiday till Friday.  I have to wait till next week for my goodies!!!  So again, my apologies to my swapees - your ATCs are in progress (for excuse, go back to the car paragraph) and will be out in the post shortly.

As I have a new toy to play with, I'm practicing my light tent skills.  Not overly chuffed with the lights that came with it - needs to be worked on, that aspect.  And the cloths need a press.  But all in all, the results are good.  As were Lil Miss B's results with the keyring below.  They had to make and design their own keyrings for Design Technology at school, and she's gifting it to her big sister who's about to spend a year in Malawi with one of the Christian charities.  The lettering was apparently done with laser, would you believe!  Didn't have such amazing toys at school when I was a kid!  Anyway, she asked me to take a photo for her school portfolio, so here it is....

WOYWW 156 - Happy 3rd Anniversary!!!

Woohooo!  Here we are then, third anniversary at last!  And we're off on our mammoth blog hop.  I for one am going to attempt to get round EVERYONE this week.  We have a four day holiday weekend here in the UK, in honour of our lovely Queen celebrating 60 years on the throne, so I might stand a chance of getting to more than my usual clutch!  I will certainly visit everyone who visits me.

Now, if you're wondering what I'm on about - go and visit The Stamping Ground where you can commence your world-wide wanderings across the workdesks of the world....LOL

Yes, I'm up for an ATC swap, and I've made 5 in total.  Not a lot I know, but quite a bit of work went into them, and I've had a kind of busy weekend (more on that in a mo) so didn't manage to get more than my lucky number done!  So, I'm going to send an ATC to the next person in the list after me who is participating, and then if anyone else wants to swap with me I'll accept the first four askers.  Let me know via the comments and we can work out addresses etc. 

NB - Edited to add.... actually, anyone who wants to swap ATCs with me, I'll happily make some more if you can be patient and wait a couple of extra days, but they won't be the shiny silver ones below.... LOL.... mainly on account of me having run out of the adhesive aluminium for the  moment.

My desk this week.....

It's busy but not as busy as it could be.  If you look really hard, you'll see my ATCs at the back there.  The main thing I'm working on is a pillow box for a gift for a friend's daughter who turns 11 later this week.  I got the cutting file from Silhouette for my Silhouette SD, and then I'm just inking up the cut shape with blue (french blue) and green (aquamarine) chalk inks, and stamping a seaweed frond in London Fog stazon.  That's all coated with lashings of ice coloured stickles... I'll add ribbon and a charm once it's assembled.  Her card is a mermaid Tilda, she having a thing for mermaids at the mo.  I've not made the card yet, so watch this space for a pic once done.

So....if you read last week's small print you will have seen that I had a... *coff*... special birthday on Saturday, and Mr B was planning things.  I had known about a couple of potential visitors, but not feeling 100% in the run up, I begged him to cancel any massive party ideas he had, so bless him, he did just that.  However, two people he didn't cancel, and I'm glad he didn't.  My two best friends from secondary school - Vrinda and Nicola - came up on Saturday evening and stayed till Sunday, and we had a low-key but fab time.  I last saw Vrinda just over a year or so ago, but Nicky I'd not seen for nearly 4 years.  It's funny - I look at them and see them just as we were as teens.  Hard to think that their collective children have 83 years between them.  LOL.  Make that 94 years between OURS, even though Lil Miss B isn't my own, she's still mine...

I won't go on too much more - suffice it to say that the birthday fairy bought me lots of lovely goodies including plenty of craft supplies.....and a scrapbooking tote trolley!  YAY.  I also got a fab gargoyle and moon-gazing hare for the garden...

And before I forget - thank you to everyone who left lovely comments on my blog and FB - your birthday wishes were much appreciated!

WOYWW 155 - nearly there!

Woot!  One week left to the third anniversary of WOYWW!  Are your ATCs ready yet?  Mine aren't...  but I'm working on them, and they will be done by next Wednesday, for sure....

For those who have happened upon my blog by accident, please do go and check out Julia's blog here for all the info.  I've not gone mad, I'm just a desk-nut...LOL....

Now, to answer a couple of questions that have cropped up - 1) the talc is to de-sticky the EZ mount where the stamps aren't, so that it doesn't clog up my scissors so much.  2) Stamping isn't something I'm new at - I got my first two stamps and EP in 1988 - and it was such a new hobby that the lady in the shop was demonstrating embossing powder.... using a toaster!!!!  Ah yes, I remember those days well.  If you're interested, the stamps were an ivy garland, and my initial, and my first EPs were gold, copper and sparkle.  I think I still have some of the sparkle somewhere....and I definitely do have - and still use - the stamps.  The monogram I used to use to tart up my writing paper.  Ah yes, those definitely WERE the days!

Well, an awful lot of the same as last week - ATC stuff.  Which, please note, I have turned face down so you can't see what I've done!  Can't spoil the surprise now, can we?

Here's a gratuitous under-my-desk shot - someone commented on my blog recently that I must have short legs cos of everything under my desk, but I think the photo was misleading, because it's the desk to the right of where I sit that is piled high - the one I sit at is less so.  Under it you can see my paint crate, my knitting bag, and something REALLY random - a bag with a couple of Xmas prezzies in!  Not sure why they didn't make it to their intended recipients...

Next picture isn't so much me patting my own back as patting Lil Miss B's.   Akilli Melek (Caroline) mentioned on last week's WOYWW that she was involved in a sale to support the hospice she and her Mr go to with Little Miss A, and I offered to send some cards up.  Now, Lil Miss B has been having a topper frenzy lately, making lots of toppers to put on cards, but not doing anything with them.  I asked her if she'd like to help out and donate some, and the result is below.  Half those cards were made by her, half by me - and I bet you can't pick out which ones..... very well done, Lil Miss B, very well done!  I'm proud of you....
