WOYWW 596 - Calm Before The Storm

Hello again and welcome back to my desk for WOYWW - What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday. Hosted as ever by the lovely Julia.

Not much to see or report this week.  The whole room is a bit of a mess - in the corner you can see my actual “office” area. I’m waiting for Miss B to move out properly, that is, finish Uni and decide if she’s staying in Exeter, or if she needs to come home for a bit first. The plan is to move the office into her bedroom, move the desks around a bit, and put a sofa bed in so that I can stitch upstairs, or we can have guests. This year has been really tough for Uni students, and the part of her Drama course she loves most (practicals) is on hold, thanks to Covid-19, which is making her feel very down.

On the right you can see a sheet hanging up. This is my dreadful attempt to screen the Kallax unit when I have to do a Zoom call for work. Teams is good because I can change the background but because work won’t pay for a pro subscription to Zoom, I can’t change the background or blur it and it’s just too busy and interesting.

The other side of the room is just as bad, but improving. I’ve bought a tripod and ring light because the plan (er-herm) is to start doing Flosstube videos. I’ve also started working on a video showing the Barn Owl progress from start to finish. I’ll post a link when it’s uploaded. The poor Halloween wall hanging is still waiting for attention!

I’ve also had a trolley from IKEA waiting for me to decide what goes in it, and a moment of inspiration prompted me to make it my sewing trolley. When not in use the machine has sat on the floor, occasionally getting kicked. Oops... this means that the desk it’s usually sat on can be alternated for other purposes - scrapbooking, laptop work... now to clear the rest of the mess on it and put the theory to test.

And lastly the cactus picture. A little bit of progress from last week - I’ve not worked on it since last Friday - but with lockdown starting tomorrow, the wedding it was intended for has been postponed and it won’t be finished now until the week before the new wedding date - once the bride and groom have picked it.

The original chart called for satin stitch in the ring, but I didn’t like how it looked (messy!), so picked two of the colours they used and cross-stitched it instead. Much neater!

So that’s it for this week. Posting this has given me a push to pick the stitching back up and get it as finished as possible, before putting it away, and then to work on the next thing.

Adios - catch you on the blog-hop!

Nice progress on your little canvas! Love the colours. I agree on the substitution. Been AGES since I did any X-stitch, but I was never a fan of sating stitch - it's just hard to get it exactly right. I have to laugh at the various Zoom calls where the background is clearly carefully curated to send a message - especially books. No trashy novels on view, only deeply cerebral texts designed to impress. Yeah. Right. :D

Moning! Loving your multi purpose room! Workplace by day, craft haven by night. Like your ring light, my daughter has one I might have to steal it. I've just bought a fancy stand to do videos (maybe), it's much more stable than my previous contraption involving my camera tripod and a selfie stick (don't ask!) and we've already used it twice for family zooms, works much better. This is so sad for university students, literally seeing a very important part of their life slip away .... I do hope for all their sakes there is some kind of resolution soon. Nice crossstitch by the way, shame about your friend's wedding, so sad. Stay well, stay safe, Cindyxx #16

I think the sheet is a simple but effective way of hiding a multitude of sins, lol!! The perils of having a multi tasking area. Well deon on contemplating doing some videos, I do admire you for doing that as it’s something I would run a mile from. Having old lighting is so important, I might have to employ something similar for the Zoom Crop in December!!

HI Di, love how the cactus turned out. Looks fab. Great idea with the IKEA trolley too- I finally got a similar one from Hobbycrafts, and was amazed by how much stuff I managed to clear off my desk, I ended up getting another, lol. Have no idea how I managed to get all that stuff on my desk, and still have room to work. Doug uses Teams for the IT courses he's tutoring, he's lucky as the company provides what they need, and his background is the wall behind him, complete with guitars! One of the other tutors asked him if he could take a screenshot of it, and use for his background, lol. Hope Liv's course gets back to normal soon for her, must be quite disheartening. Especially not knowing exactly how long it could be. Stay safe, Have a lovely week, Hugs to all of you, Shaz #4 X

Listen, you may feel out of sorts in your craft area, but it all looks very organized to me, which is more than I can say for a lot of my craftiness! LOLOL Best of luck for your daughter at Uni! It has been the same for my daughter as well. They haven't offered a lot of her medical classes this term due to COVID, which really boggles my mind. It pushes their grad date, which can be depressing for them when they are really working hard to finish!! Again, best of luck there for her! I love your stitching, it's beautiful! Here's to hoping your room situations work out soon! Blessings for your week! Felicia, #28

good job I don't have to do zoom meetings ("crop" aside, if I can make it work) the mess here is everywhere! I'm still going to be going to the office as we can keep socially distanced. Hope Liv's course doesn't get disrupted for too much longer. Helen #2

The cactus looks lovely and I enjoyed the descriptions of the various parts of your craft room! Great idea to move the sewing machine off the floor - I too have many items over the floor getting kicked...
Keep safe and stay well...

Morning, you'll be spoilt for choice when you get that extra space, i'm still toggling between rooms with two very undecided mini adults undecided on home or away during this covid crisis. Those Ikea trolleys are fab, I have two from Hobbycraft full of everything from paper to paint. Happy WoywW Tracey #10
P.S the cactus cross stitch looks awesome!!

Your place looks very busy. I sympathise with students and teachers everywhere... it is such a difficult time... but at least we have crafting to keep us occupied!

I have never heard of FlossTube. More details next time please! I don’t wanna point out the obvious in all this....perhaps you’re keeping stuff that you’re never going to use and you aren’t brutal enough in the getting rid?!! My sewing machine was in similar position so I understand the use of the trolley...I moved mine to the bottom a wardrobe, but it’s not ideal because it makes me put off digging it out!! The stitch gift is beautiful, you are definitely drawn to the careful, complicated, good eyesight and clean hands crafting aren’t you!

In our old house I used to have a dual purpose room - studio and office - and it was awful - neither worked properly! When we moved, I was fortunate enough to get a spare bedroom with a separated off dressing room, small and narrow, but just wide enough for my desk and other office stuff, leaving the main room free to be dedicated studio. It is fabulous and works very well. If you can manage to do both in one room you are cleverer than me lol! The sheet is a good idea for a neutral background for your Zoom sessions. I love your cactus cross stitch. I think satin stitch would have been out of place, and what you have done is much better. I've never mastered satin stitch and can never make it even. I love the shading, particularly on the pot. Most effective.

Happy belated WOYWW,

Ah dear Morti nice to actually come look see. Backdrop for zoom does the trick what more could you ask? I'd no idea what Floss tube was, so googled. Not sure on this zoom thing coming up.. but will try it. I've no camera set up just an iPad. Hopefully that works... esp as its a mini!!
Love that cross stitch.. Great handiwork.
Thanks for sharing, and may God bless and keep you and all whom you love safe and well.
Prayer hugs, Shaz in Oz. X

Your cactus plant is looking great. It is such a shame about the wedding being postponed, such a big day for a couple and lots of planning. I did my first video the other day and putting the phone in a suitable place to record was very tricky. I love those trolleys, very useful. Angela #20 Sorry I am so late this week.

Lovely to see a bit more of your space... my background for work is pretty chaotic! I may have to consider a sheet type arrangement. Sorry for the extremely late visit. Take care and stay safe. With love & God Bless, Caro xxx (#13)

Afternoon! Sorry I'm late for last weeks woyww! I have the Ikea trolly, ( and a Hobby Craft one) thinking when I get back into crafting they will be great! only when hubby put up my slelves and work bench there was nowhere for them to go, so, one's in what was the airing cupboard, being very usefull and the other's in the sitting room coz I didn't have a small, tall table to put a lamp on. (they both have lids)They are both great...I could find a use for one in my potting shed too! Last time I did an X stitch and finished it....was... when I was five, didn't finish til I was 7..so kinda put me off!
Stay Safe! Happy WOYWW
